"Children come to us with varying backgrounds and levels of family support. We have found it necessary to provide the 'lap time' that many of our children have missed out on. Parent and grandparent volunteers and older reading buddies may help fill this deficit for children who have missed the auditory support of being read to. Books on tape, CD, or computer are also valuable resources. These audio stories are also helpful supports for our students who get their first exposure to English when they enter our classrooms. So during the Daily Five, children may choose Listen to Reading instead of partner reading or Read to Self on a particular day." (Boushey & Moser, 2006, p. 75) The Daily Five
Some ideas for using the Listen to Reading component of the Daily 5:
Listen to Reading can be any type of listening to reading....think volunteers, cross-grade level buddies, websites. Any time that students are independently (away from their classroom teacher) listening to fluent reading (live or pre-recorded), that is considered listen to reading.
(We will not be purchasing "older technology" such as CD players. Our hope is to purchase current technology when we are able to do so.)
CD Players: Ask families for donations; order books on CD from Scholastic - usually 4 for $20 (comes with CD and Book)
iPods: students can record themselves reading the book (or you can read the book on the iPod) and they follow along with the book; ask volunteers to use PhotoBooth or Garageband or even iMovie to record their voices reading the book and show the pages of the book.
